The Hughes Crew

Jerry Hughes is a native Idahoan who made his first rafting trip in 1963. 2012 is Jerry's 47th year of working in this region as a professional guide. Jerry played football for the University of Idaho Vandals and also earned a Bachelor Degree in Business and a Juris Doctorate in Law from the University of Idaho. Current member of the Idaho State Bar.

Carole Finley was raised in northern Idaho. Carole is an experienced river guide, and has worked in the river outfitting business for 38 years. Carole holds degrees in History and Economics from the University of Idaho. Master at heavy duty commercial style sewing in the Hughes boat shop.

Bob “Buzzard” Brunzell
BS Physical Education and Masters in Sports Science. Coached 28 years and taught Senior College Prep English 36 years. Coached an 8 man football State Championship team at Cambridge High in 1982. 2012 is Buzz’s 35th year guiding with Hughes.

Bob Madrazo
Retired teacher/ special education director/ alternative schools principal. Bob, throughout his educational career, worked closely with emotionally disturbed and "at risk" students. Holds numerous educational degrees and credentials. Played college football. Races in sailboat regatta's throughout the Caribbean in the off season. 30 years guiding for Hughes River Expeditions. Ace fishing guide.

John “JC” Cole
World Traveler and received a BS from U. Vermont. High school biology, chemistry, ecology, and geology teacher for 27 years. Coached high school football, girls basketball, swimming & track. Developed Sun Valley Community School outdoor program, and was academic director for Sun Valley Ski Education Association. Idaho river guide for 36 years.

Kevin Trainor
Bachelors degree Dartmouth, and Juris Doctorate U. Idaho. College rugby. US Marine Corp Viet Nam photo pilot. Commercial pilot, married to Linda (RN) 40 years, two grown daughters who love to raft. Guide since 1985, with HRE since 1999.

Hugh Cooke
Bachelor and Master degrees in Business Management and Recreation Administration. Previously worked in national operations with the US Ski Team. Assoc. Director of alumni Relations U. Idaho, and adjunct faculty member in Parks and Rec. Served on NBC Sports staff past three Olympic Winter Games in ski racing broadcast booth. Third decade guiding in Idaho, more than 15 years on the Hughes Crew.

Ryan Diehl
Bachelors Degree in Outdoor Recreation from U. Idaho. Assistant Director of the Outdoor Rec Program Utah State University. Played football for Idaho Vandals. Working on Masters Degree at Utah State. Guides two or three trips annually.

Traves Olson
Offensive lineman for Idaho State Bengals. Finance Degree ((ISU) and MBA from Boise State. 15 years on Hughes Crew. Married to Julie Robertson, and Dad to wonderful twin daughters – Brooke and Sarah (4 years old). Worked winters in Chile as a fly fishing guide for 5 years.

Joel Huettig
Journalism Degree from Boise State, and works for Boise School District. Grew up working on Huettig Farms in Magic Valley. Lives in Boise with wife Gretchen who has a Chinese Medicine Practice, and sons Gus (3) and newborn Walter. 14 years on the Hughes Crew.

Tony Herold
Borah High Center fielder. Broken hand in the batter's box ended what should have been college baseball opportunity. Bachelors Degree in Outdoor Recreation from U. Idaho. Works year around with Hughes River Exp on the rivers, and in the office and boatshop. Top notch fishing guide, and office internet ace.

Ashley

Ashley Hughes
General Studies Degree U. Idaho, plus culinary School, Seattle Art Institute. High school v-ball and b-ball gal also Student Body President at Cambridge High 2003-2004. Won National Outdoor Recreation Award for FFA, also rowed crew for Washington State University. Grew up on the rivers. Runs the best river kitchen in the business.

Collin

Colin Hughes
High Scool basketball and football, Cambridge High school Student Body President 2008-2009. Currently studying Conservation Sciences at U. Idaho. Started working as a gear boatman running our 22 foot pontoons when he was 14. Member of the Delt House at Idaho. Snow boarder, and fly fisherman. Colin would love to guide you fly fishing on the Middle Fork or bass, trout, & sturgeon fishing on the Snake.

Mark

Mark Macedo
Grew up with Colin running gear boats on the Hughes Crew. Student body president Cambridge High 2007-2008 plus football, basketball and track. Attending the University of Idaho studying Conservation Sciences. Best curly red hair in the river business!

Marshall

Marshall Minder
Master percussionist, snow mobiler, snow boarder, and long range backpacker. In high school was star point guard on Council High basketball teams. High water paddle raft ace, fishing guide... Marshall can do it all. 2 years College of Music U. Idaho.

David

David Wert
AAA sweepboat driver on the Middle Fork of the Salmon, and just as good rowing, paddling, and guiding fishermen. Works in his family’s metal fabricating shop producing river equipment that is shipped world wide. Pick up b-ball ace. Don’t play horse with David. Attending Boise State University

Aaron

Aaron Brunzell
Eagle High School. Basketball at Columbia Basin College, Associates degree from College of Western Idaho. Ace boatman on all craft, fishing guide, chief entertainer, pied piper-kids love Aaron. Aaron is everyone’s favorite person to work with.

Josh Edmunson
Quarterback on State Championship 8 man football team at Council, ID. Carpenter working with his father’s custom home business. Personal trainer.

Devon

Devon Barker
Junior High School teacher, Ed Degree College of Idaho. College ski racer, and world class kayak competitor in Freestyle and Surf Kayaking. Has been Surf Kayaking world champion, and US Champion in Freestyle.

John

John Barker
Extreme Skier in his youth. Runs Barker Expeditions on the Owyhee and Bruneau Rivers. Knows the Owyhee Plateau and Canyons better than anyone!

Martin Moore
Accountant/Cost Engineer Idaho National Engineering Labs. 25 years Hughes Crew.

Bob Sevy
Long time Idaho river guide/outfitter, and friend. Boats a couple of trips annually with Hughes. River historian, and fantastic fly fishing guide.

Doug Rigby
Grew up in Challis, ID. BA in Philosophy at Boise State University. Guide since 1986. Veteran river guide on all Idaho rivers. Married and living in Boise with wife Mary, a family physician and graduate of Cambridge High.

Ben Warren
Bachelors in Education Boise State. Played football for the Broncos. Owns and operates a tax preparation service. Ace fishing guide.

Julien & Jenni

Julien Patrick & Jenni Ritch
Council, ID. Julien Works part time on the Hughes Crew when he isn’t busy with his family’s drywall contracting business. Biggest smile on the crew! Julien likes “river time”. Jenni works in Hughes office and warehouse year round. Loves to hop on a trip as a swamper in season.

Matt Cox (& dog Shadow)
Currently living in Cambridge, ID where he is attending online school majoring in Elementary and Special Education. In the off season, Matt stays busy as a member of the Cambridge City Council and working as an independent fence contractor. Matt is also the Cambridge girls JV head basketball coach and the boys Varsity assistant football coach.

Lisa Thompson

Lisa Thompson
Lisa works in the HRE office, warehouse,and drives shuttles to and from the river. In the off season Lisa lives in Council, ID where she works as a barista and bartender.



They have real jobs, but we haven’t forgotten them……..

Ryan Honsinger Mechanical Enginnering U. Idaho. Worked on Hughes Crew for 8 years. Using his degree in SLC. We miss you Ryan. Come back for a trip here and there.

Computer Systems Degree Idaho State University. Computer technician St. Lukes Hospital in Boise. Hoping Eric can sneak away for a trip or two in 2012.

University of Colorado - Bachelor of Arts - Geography. Lives in North Carolina, and works with Environmental Systems Research institute. Wife Helen, son Jackson(4), and daughter Kat (2).
